5.3.1 Why is BMI important to Surrogates?
At GSHC Surrogacy & Egg Donation, we’re committed to helping every surrogate have a healthy, safe, and successful journey. One important factor that fertility clinics consider is Body Mass Index (BMI), as it can significantly affect IVF success, pregnancy health, and overall well-being.
Clinics set specific BMI requirements to reduce medical risks and support the best possible outcome for both the surrogate and the baby.
Why Is BMI Important to Surrogates?
If your BMI is too high or too low, it can increase the chances of complications. Higher BMI is linked to conditions like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. It may also reduce the likelihood of a successful embryo transfer and increase the need for a C-section. These risks are why clinics carefully review BMI during the surrogate screening process.
How to Calculate Your BMI for Surrogacy
To see if you meet surrogacy BMI requirements, use this formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m²)
BMI = [Weight (lbs) ÷ Height (in²)] × 703
If you’re unsure, you can use the NIH’s BMI calculator here:

Many surrogates miscalculate their BMI because their height or weight is different from what they assumed. Your doctor will measure you at the clinic, which may not match what’s listed on your ID.
If you're above the limit
If your BMI is slightly too high, you may still qualify after making some lifestyle changes. Many women have successfully improved their health and gone on to become surrogates. Clinics prefer to see steady, long-term habits rather than rapid weight loss.
Eating more balanced meals, staying active, and getting enough rest can make a big difference over time. Focus on what’s sustainable—small, consistent steps are far more effective than quick fixes.
At GSHC, we’ve supported many women on this path. We know it takes dedication, and we’re here to help guide you every step of the way.
