5.3.9 Medical Screening for the Surrogate Mother’s Partner|Requirements & Importance
1. Your Role as a Surrogate’s Partner: Why Medical Screening Matters
If your partner is preparing to become a gestational surrogate, you play an important role in supporting a safe, healthy journey—for her, the baby, and the intended parents. One key part of this process is your medical screening. It’s not just a formality—it helps protect everyone involved and ensures the pregnancy moves forward without unnecessary risks.
2. What Surrogate’s Partner will Be Asked to Do
As the surrogate’s partner, you’ll be asked to complete two important health screenings:
1. STD Testing
You’ll need to do bloodwork to check for common sexually transmitted infections. These can be passed between partners and, if untreated, could impact the pregnancy. If something shows up, treatment will be required before your partner can be medically cleared.
2. Drug Screening
A urine test is also required to screen for drug use. This is part of ensuring that your household provides a stable and healthy environment for the pregnancy. It’s not about judgment—it’s about protecting the well-being of everyone involved.
Whenever possible, it’s best to complete these tests on the same day your partner does her medical screening at the fertility clinic. If that’s not possible, you can do the testing at a local lab using an order provided by the clinic.
3. What If a Test Comes Back Positive?
For STD Results:
If your results show an infection, your partner’s medical clearance may be delayed. Treatment will be required, and follow-up testing may be needed before continuing.
For Drug Use:
If drug use is detected and wasn’t disclosed ahead of time, it can affect your partner’s ability to move forward in the surrogacy process. In some cases, it may even lead to a failed match or the termination of the agreement with the intended parents. Being upfront and transparent is always the best path.
4. Ongoing Expectations to our Surrogate’s Partners
Your involvement doesn’t end with testing. Throughout the surrogacy journey, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, support your partner emotionally and physically, and follow any clinic guidelines. There may be times when additional testing is requested, especially before embryo transfer or later in the pregnancy.
Some key reminders:
- Practice safe sex to avoid infections.
- Avoid substance use that could impact your partner’s clearance or create unnecessary risks.
- Be engaged and informed—it helps everything go more smoothly.
