7.15 4D Ultrasound in Surrogacy Pregnancy
During a surrogacy journey, few moments are as emotional as seeing the baby move for the first time. A 4D ultrasound offers intended parents and surrogate mothers a chance to watch the baby yawn, stretch, or curl up in real time. It’s more than just an image—it feels like a real connection.
At GSHC Surrogacy, we understand why 4D scans are so meaningful. They create lasting memories. But it’s also important to know that they’re not part of standard medical care. While beautiful, these scans are completely optional and not required as part of the surrogacy plan.
1. What Is a 4D Ultrasound?
Unlike the still black-and-white images from a regular ultrasound, a 4D scan captures real-time motion—like a short video. Parents can sometimes see their baby smile, stretch, or turn. These scans are usually offered at private imaging studios and are designed as keepsakes. They’re not used for medical diagnosis and won’t be reviewed by your OB for health purposes.
2. What Ultrasounds Are Medically Required?
Throughout the pregnancy, your doctor will schedule specific ultrasounds to monitor the baby’s development. These include the dating scan in early pregnancy, the NT scan around 12 weeks, the anatomy scan between 18–22 weeks, and possibly growth scans later on if needed. These medical scans are essential and are always coordinated with your OB, GSHC, and the intended parents.
3. When a 4D Ultrasound Becomes a Gift
Some of our surrogates choose to give a 4D ultrasound as a special gesture to their intended parents. Especially when parents live far away or can’t attend many OB appointments, receiving a short video or printed 3D photo can feel incredibly personal and meaningful. Some studios even offer small keepsakes, like a teddy bear with a recording of the baby’s heartbeat.
One intended parent shared, “It was the first time we really felt like we met our baby. We’ll never forget it.”
4. Things to Know Before Scheduling
Since these scans aren’t medically necessary, we ask that you keep your GSHC case manager informed if you’re planning to schedule one. While written approval isn’t always required, it’s important to check in and make sure everyone is on the same page.
Be sure to book with a licensed, professional imaging center. And because insurance doesn’t cover elective scans, payment should be discussed ahead of time if the intended parents are involved.
A 4D ultrasound isn’t essential to the surrogacy process—but it can become a deeply touching moment in the journey. If you're considering it, we’re here to help make it a smooth, thoughtful experience for everyone involved.
