5.3.2 Why is Sonohysterography Required for Surrogates?
At GSHC Surrogacy & Egg Donation, we make sure every surrogate goes through a complete medical evaluation to confirm she’s healthy and ready for a safe, successful pregnancy. One of the tests that some fertility clinics may request is called a sonohysterogram, or saline infusion sonography. This is a special type of ultrasound that gives doctors a clearer look at the uterus before moving forward with embryo transfer.
Why Do Fertility Clinics Require Sonohysterography?
For an embryo to implant and grow, the uterus needs to be in good shape. This test helps the clinic check for anything that might make pregnancy harder, such as:
- Polyps or fibroids
- Scar tissue from past surgeries or C-sections
- Abnormalities in the shape of the uterus
- Whether the uterine lining is thick and healthy enough for implantation
What to Expect During Sonohysterography
The test is typically done between the 5th and 10th day of your menstrual cycle, soon after your period ends. This timing helps reduce the risk of infection and allows for the clearest view of the uterus. That said, some clinics may have different timing requirements based on their own protocols, so be sure to follow the specific instructions provided by your clinic.
During the procedure, a small amount of sterile saline is gently placed into the uterus through a thin catheter. At the same time, an ultrasound is used to take images and check the shape and condition of the uterus.
The entire process usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is generally well tolerated. Some clinics may recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever ahead of time to help minimize any cramping or discomfort.
Does Every Surrogate Need Sonohysterography?
Almost all clinics include it in the surrogacy medical screening process to ensure a healthy uterine environment for pregnancy. If needed, GSHC Surrogacy & Egg Donation will guide you through the process and coordinate your appointment.
