7.13 Prenatal Vitamins – A Must for Surrogate Mothers
Taking care of your health during pregnancy is one of the most important ways you support the baby you’re carrying. At GSHC Surrogacy, we require all surrogates to take prenatal vitamins—not just as a routine, but as a key part of giving the baby the healthiest start possible.
1. Why They’re Required
Pregnancy puts extra demands on your body. Prenatal vitamins fill in nutritional gaps to help you stay strong and support the baby’s development. They’re especially important for:
- Preventing birth defects – Folic acid helps protect the baby’s brain and spine.
- Supporting bones and teeth – Calcium and vitamin D help the baby grow strong.
- Reducing pregnancy risks – They can lower the chances of low birth weight or early delivery.
- Boosting energy and oxygen flow – Iron helps prevent fatigue and supports healthy circulation.
- Promoting brain development – Nutrients like DHA, choline, and B12 support the baby’s nervous system.
2. When to Start
If possible, start taking prenatal vitamins at least three months before embryo transfer. If you’re already pregnant and haven’t started yet, that’s okay—just begin now. The sooner you start, the better.
3. What to Look for in a Good Prenatal Vitamin
Look for a high-quality prenatal that includes:
- Folic Acid (400–800 mcg)
- Calcium (1000 mg) & Vitamin D (600 IU)
- Iron (27 mg)
- Choline (450 mg) & DHA (Omega-3s)
4. Additional Tips for Surrogates
- Gummy vitamins often don’t include iron. If you prefer gummies, you may need an extra iron supplement.
- Vegetarian or vegan? You might need more B12 and iron from additional sources.
- If a prenatal vitamin makes you nauseous, talk to your doctor—there may be alternatives that are easier on your stomach.
- Take your vitamin with food or before bed if it helps with digestion or morning sickness.
- Keep them in a visible place—like next to your toothbrush or coffee mug—as a daily reminder.
5. We’re Here to Support You
Taking prenatal vitamins is a small but powerful part of your role as a surrogate. If you have any questions or need help choosing a brand, your case manager is just a message away.
