6.7 Do Surrogates Need Bed Rest After Embryo Transfer?
Many surrogates and intended parents wonder whether bed rest is necessary after an embryo transfer. While some intended parents may request their surrogate to rest for a few days, and some surrogates worry about movement affecting implantation, the good news is that most fertility clinics today do not require bed rest. In fact, research suggests that resuming normal activity may lead to better outcomes than prolonged bed rest.
At GSHC Surrogacy & Egg Donation, we ensure that surrogates receive the best guidance and support to promote a successful pregnancy. This guide will help you understand whether bed rest is needed and what surrogates should and shouldn’t do after an embryo transfer.
1. What the Research Says
Years ago, doctors used to think that lying still after an embryo transfer would help the embryo "stick." But newer studies have shown that’s not the case. In fact, too much rest may slightly decrease the chances of success.
For example, one study found that women who got up and resumed light activity right away had higher live birth rates than those who were told to stay still for even ten minutes (Friedler et al., 2013). Another large analysis involving over 21,000 patients confirmed similar results—movement was linked to slightly better outcomes (Santos et al., 2022).
The takeaway? The body knows what to do. You don’t need to lie still to help the embryo implant.
2. So What Should You Do After Transfer?
Instead of staying in bed, just take it easy. Most surrogates do best when they return to light daily activities and listen to their bodies.
You can walk around, cook a meal, take a shower, sit up and chat—those are all perfectly fine. What’s most important is that you feel calm and comfortable. Stressing out or forcing yourself to lie down all day isn’t necessary and may even be counterproductive.
Your uterus is designed to hold and protect the embryo. Everyday movement isn’t going to knock it loose.
3. What to Avoid (For Now)
There are still a few things to steer clear of for the first few days, just to be safe:
- Skip heavy workouts or high-impact activities like jumping, running, or weightlifting.
- Try to keep stress low—rest your mind as well as your body.
- And of course, avoid alcohol and smoking, which can affect early pregnancy.
If you feel tired or experience light cramping, it’s totally okay to rest. Just remember: rest doesn't mean lying flat in bed for days. It simply means taking care of yourself without overdoing it.
4. Common Concerns—Answered
- Can the embryo fall out if I move too much?
No. Once the embryo is placed in your uterus, it’s safe and secure. Walking, bending, or sitting won't harm it.
- Can I go back to work the next day?
Yes, unless your job involves heavy lifting or strenuous activity, most surrogates return to work the next day without any issues.
- What if I feel mild cramps?
That’s normal. You can rest if it helps, but you don’t need to stay in bed all day. Just take it easy.
If you’re ever unsure about what you can or can’t do after transfer, your fertility clinic is always your best resource. You’re also encouraged to reach out to your agency team—we’re here to walk alongside you and make sure everything goes smoothly. Some intended parents may have their own thoughts or requests as well, so keeping open and kind communication with them can go a long way in helping everyone feel reassured and supported during this special part of the journey.
