6.6 The Embryo Transfer Procedure – A Moment of Excitement and Anticipation
At GSHC Surrogacy, we understand that the embryo transfer is one of the most exciting and emotional moments in the surrogacy journey. This quick, painless, and non-invasive procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure the intended parents’ embryo is placed precisely into the surrogate mother’s uterus.
For both the intended parents and the surrogate mother, this step is filled with anticipation and hope. Many surrogate mothers describe it as an amazing experience, as they can watch the transfer in real-time on the ultrasound screen, witnessing the very moment an embryo begins its journey toward pregnancy.
As a trusted surrogacy agency, GSHC Surrogacy ensures that every surrogate mother is fully informed, well-prepared, and supported throughout this critical step.
The Embryo Transfer Process
1. Consent & Pre-Procedure Preparation
Long before the transfer day arrives, the intended parents work closely with their doctor to confirm important decisions—like how many embryos will be transferred, which embryos to use based on quality or genetic testing (if done), and whether they’re open to the possibility of twins or more. All of this is documented in a consent form that’s signed well in advance, so everything is clear and agreed upon before the big day.
2. Preparing for the Transfer
On the day of the transfer, the surrogate will be asked to arrive with a full bladder. This might sound odd, but it’s actually important. A full bladder helps straighten the uterus slightly, which allows the doctor to guide the catheter more easily and clearly see what’s happening on the ultrasound. If your bladder is too full, they might ask you to empty just a little bit—don’t worry, they’ll guide you through it.
After check-in, you’ll change into a medical gown and lie down on the procedure table. If permitted by the clinic, a support person—such as a partner, friend, or case manager—may be able to stay with you during the procedure for extra comfort and encouragement.
3. The Embryo Transfer Under Ultrasound Guidance
When it’s time, the doctor will gently insert a speculum (just like during a pap smear) to reach the cervix. Using real-time ultrasound on your lower abdomen, they’ll guide a very thin, soft catheter that holds the embryo into your uterus. You can even watch the process on the screen if you like—it’s a short but meaningful moment that many surrogates say stays with them forever.
Once the embryo is released, the catheter is slowly removed, and the procedure is complete. It’s quick, gentle, and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

Many surrogate mothers at GSHC Surrogacy describe this as a deeply emotional experience, knowing they are helping create life for the intended parents.
4. Post-Transfer Care
After your embryo transfer, you'll be asked to relax in the room for 10–30 minutes, giving your body a moment to settle. Since no anesthesia is used, you should be able to resume light activities shortly afterward. Most surrogate mothers report experiencing only mild pressure or cramping, with minimal discomfort. Throughout this period, GSHC Surrogacy continues to provide ongoing support, ensuring that you have all the guidance you need as you eagerly await the next milestone—implantation confirmation.
