7.4 Medical Insurance in Surrogacy Pregnancy
What Every Surrogate Mother Should Know | GSHC Surrogacy
In a surrogacy pregnancy, securing and properly using medical insurance is one of the most important steps in protecting both the surrogate mother and the intended parents from unexpected financial risks. At GSHC Surrogacy Agency, we’ve supported hundreds of journeys by ensuring that surrogates are covered by insurance policies designed specifically for pregnancy and surrogacy care.
Today, many intended parents work with a specialized insurance broker to purchase a qualified plan—whether it’s an ACA policy or a commercial surrogacy-specific plan. But having insurance isn’t enough.
👉 Using the insurance correctly is essential—and it’s a required responsibility for every surrogate.
🧾 Who Pays for Medical Expenses in Surrogacy?
In every GSHC-managed journey, intended parents are responsible for 100% of pregnancy-related medical costs, including:
- Monthly insurance premiums
- Co-pays and co-insurance
- Deductibles and any out-of-pocket expenses
Surrogate mothers should never pay for their pregnancy care.
To ensure the plan is appropriate, GSHC or the IPs work with licensed surrogacy insurance brokers who help select and enroll in coverage that includes maternity care for the surrogate.
📌 What Surrogate Mothers Must Do
Once insurance is active, the surrogate mother must:
- Carry her insurance card
- Know her policy number and group number
- Select an in-network OB, hospital, lab, and imaging center
- Confirm network coverage at every appointment and referral
🔔 Reminder: Even with full insurance, all medical bills will be issued under the surrogate’s name.
If a provider is out-of-network or the surrogate does not confirm coverage, she may receive a bill—and unpaid bills can impact her personal credit.
📤 What to Do If You Receive a Bill
Even when insurance is correctly set up, bills are still addressed to the surrogate. That’s why it’s important to:
- Submit all co-pays, invoices, and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) to the agency
- Request reimbursement from the escrow account promptly
- Continue monitoring for new bills after delivery—especially from the hospital or anesthesia providers
📅 Escrow accounts close after the journey, so any late bills must be submitted quickly to ensure payment.
